Backing every game, tournament, and new uniform at RM is a group of parent volunteers working behind the scenes to support student-athletes. The Booster Club plays a key role in RM athletics by organizing fundraisers, coordinating volunteers, and providing resources that go beyond what county funding can cover.
Although Montgomery County Public Schools covers basic athletic expenses such as officials and field maintenance, additional needs are often supported by the Booster Club. Approximately $220 per athlete per season is necessary to cover expenses that MCPS doesn’t cover, including jerseys, equipment, transportation and special events. Last year alone, Athletic Director Daniel Whitlow requested $60 thousand in supplementary funds. Through consistent fundraising and community involvement, the parent-run club helps to ensure that RM teams have access to both goods and opportunities that enhance their athletic experiences.
A recent example of the Booster Club’s impact was a holiday basketball tournament held earlier this winter. According to RM Athletic Director Daniel Whitlow, the club helped fund vendor costs and organize concessions, including a food truck present during the event. The Booster Club also manages sponsorship posters displayed above The Roy (RM’s athletic stadium), commending families and community members whose significant donations support RM athletics.
“They just kind of help organize a lot of that,” Whitlow said. “They also do special projects like the signage outside in the stadium.”
Whitlow added that Booster Club funding has contributed to improvements across RM athletic programs. “That’s why six or seven of our teams this year are getting new uniforms,” Whitlow said. He also noted that RM’s athletic facilities have improved over time due to consistent financial support. “Our fields have gotten progressively better over the years, because of the funds that they allocate,” Whitlow said.
Booster Club President Stephanie Weaver said her motivation for joining was rooted in supporting students directly. “I wanted to help the student athletes and be part of something that really makes a difference,” she said. “It’s also a good way to meet people who care about the school and sports.”
As president, Weaver helps organize events, manage club operations and coordinate with volunteers and staff to ensure activities run smoothly. Communication between the club, coaches and volunteers is handled through emails, group chats and flyers to keep everyone informed.
Booster Club Treasurer Mia D’Albora said fundraising is one of the organization’s main responsibilities. “We usually sell different items and also hold special events at the school,” she said. “Those are our main ways of raising money.”
According to D’Albora, the funds raised are carefully managed and allocated in collaboration with the athletic department. “The money goes toward things like uniforms, food and drinks, and transportation for the teams,” she said. She added that she works closely with the athletic director to ensure funds are used appropriately and within budget.
Volunteer participation is essential to the club’s success, particularly during large athletic events. Mr. Whitlow said student volunteers often assist with concessions, but adult volunteers are especially needed during high-attendance games. “For a football game that has over 1,000 people, we need all hands on deck,” he said.
Booster Club member Blaise DeFazio said volunteering has allowed him to support RM athletics while connecting with other families. Mr. DeFazio, who has been involved for four years, said his favorite experience has been participating in the annual mulch sale. “Getting to meet other parents and kids and work together towards one common goal has made the experience meaningful,” DeFazio said.
