An electrifying atmosphere led the Richard Montgomery girls volleyball team over Walt Whitman 3 sets to 2 on Friday night. After the Rockets dropped the first two sets of the match, they stormed back to overtake the Vikings with the boys varsity soccer team cheering loudly after their game was canceled due to lightning.
After losing the first two sets 22-25 and 13-25, RM found themselves back down 14-17 in the third set. A loss there would have finished the game, but the sensational comeback, driven by the fan support, saved the night.
The Rockets, on the verge of defeat, battled back to win the third set 29-27, and did not stop there. RM went on to win the fourth and fifth sets, 25-23 and 15-8. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Whitman, but the gymnasium floor was bumpy due to water damage.
“It was so amazing,” sophomore Brooke Richman said. “It felt great to be a part of that scene tonight. Each and every point was celebrated so hard with the help of the crowd.”
The lightning delay that canceled the boys varsity soccer game did not dampen the players’ attitudes as the soccer team served as cheering squad for the whole game. “The support we got from our fans definitely helped,” senior captain Abby Hernandez said. “We got down on ourselves but they brought us back up and didn’t let us give up.”
Richard Montgomery play Walter Johnson at home on Tuesday for Senior Night. “I hope for another great turnout and fan support for WJ,” Hernandez said. “Being Senior Night, it would mean so much for us all.” Richard Montgomery advanced to 6-3 on the season after the intense comeback victory.
JV girls volleyball also stayed undefeated on the season after sweeping Whitman 2-0. JV are 9-0 on the season. “I am extremely proud of the team’s performances throughout the season, especially since we have not lost a single set in any of our games so far,” sophomore Belinda Lin said. “We will continue to practice diligently and we hope to be undefeated for the rest of the season!”
