The varsity boys soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak to beat Kennedy 7-1. After a slow start to the year, losing the first two games to Wootton and cross-town rival Rockville, the team fought hard to regain their form against Kennedy.
Positives could be taken away from both losses. The Rockets were able to hold a lead for almost the entirety of both, but conceded a few easy goals that caught them off guard.
“We weren’t hungry enough against Wootton. We played well and got a few goals, but from there we didn’t improve. We got complacent and when the other team scored on us we put our heads down,” captain Will Diaz said.
“It’s not how we thought we were going to start the season. Especially when we lost to Rockville after the result we got against them last year.”
The loss particularly rattled captain Aram Sahakyan, who said “I felt like we had let each other and our school down by letting our rivals come back and beat us.”
However, the boys would bounce back and get a huge result against Kennedy on Wednesday night at home. The start of the game lagged at a 1-0 lead for the Rockets, but quickly escalated into a 3-0 game at the half with goals coming from Alan Serano, Aram Sahakyan, and Anders Alileo. From there they were given a small scare when Kennedy put a lucky one in to make it 3-1, but all doubt was erased when the Rockets put 4 more on the board in a span of twenty minutes.
“Kennedy was essential for our moral and was representative of our potential as a team.” Continued the in-form Sahakyan. “Scoring 7 goals the way we did really relieved us of the tension and stress that had started to build up in the locker room. We’re ready to accomplish great things.”
