The Richard Montgomery Rockets lost to Bethesda Chevy-Chase in a 4-10 game on Tuesday.
The game was the second in a series of challenging match-ups for the Rockets and their third loss.
Strong offensive presence supported by a forceful defense led by senior Maeve Givens allowed the Rockets to score three goals in the first half from juniors Kerri Corcoran, Gaby Phillips, and senior Sarah Morgan.
An explicit aim at the half was to tie the score but an early Barons’ goal in the second half knocked the Rockets off course.
The second half saw the Barons dominating in the Rockets’ defensive third to put up 6 goals with the final score reflected glaring strengths and weakness of the varsity team. Senior attacker Clare Hemmig noted that “the hustle and aggression [was] there, but we struggled transitioning.” Sophomore defender Lizzie Kinnard agreed with Hemmig, adding that junior goalkeeper Cam Aaron “became a rock for everyone in the second half”, saving 18 of the 28 shots on goals.
While Kinnard and fellow sophomore defender Sierra Longest noticed the Rocket’s vulnerabilities, both had hope for future games. Longest sees the team “improv[ing] on playing defense not only in [their] zone, but keeping up pressure across the field” while Kinnard predicted the return of injured players would allow for a strengthened team.
The Rockets will face Wootton, another tough opponent, at their field on Friday, April 15.
