State of the Rocket
A briefing and analysis of the current state of events at Richard Montgomery High School
by SGA School-Wide Secretary Darian Garcia
This article is written by Darian Garcia, Secretary of Richard Montgomery High School. The president is a bit busy with his duties, but this statement is representative of all of SGA.
Teachers, parents, members of SGA, my fellow students:
Today marks the first year someone has given us the State of the Union.
Every year, this school elects students to lead them. The expectations are regularly low, as students still hold a relatively miniscule amount of power in the school’s major decisions. Still, I believe this past year more than ever, expectations have been raised. Hope has been sparked. People have been responsive to what the SGA has been doing, whether in a positive or negative light. So I hope we can work together this year as a school on the issues that matter the most to us: dress code policy, and a stronger voice for the students in influencing administrative policy.
Since this is my final year here as a senior, I feel like a standard has been set. This assessment of our union at its core is not simply about yesterday, but instead about today: what has brought us here, and where it should take us.
I write to you, fellow students, to express my excitement with what we have done. In 2015, the SGA renewed old events, like Class Hallway Decorations and Outdoor Pep Rallies, and also sparked new ones, with Senior Unity Day and the upcoming Winter WhiteOut, sponsored by JamFest. This dance will be unlike last year’s and feature a wintery theme that provides students the ability to wear something white.
There may be those among us who everyday intend to make us believe that everything is bad, and unfixable. I am here to tell you that we can resolve problems, undertake challenges, and move even further as one of the top academic schools in the nation. The school is more unified than ever. But unity days and pep rallies alone could not have achieved this feat. It was the understanding and zeal of the students that made this past year one of the best, and most integrated than ever. IB, MYP, Pre-IB, On-level, AP students. I would like to take this opportunity to say that no matter what courses we are taking, what program were in, or what sports team we play for, above all, we are Rockets.
The following is a list of events that are being planned by the SGA:
- Blood Drive- February 23rd
- MR. RM — March 4th
- Winter WhiteOut sponsored by Jamfest — March 18th
The football team, along with every other amazing RM team, has been valiantly defending our dignity as students. So many of our teams have become the best in the county, or even among the best in the state (yes, I’m talking about you Bocce Ball). Each RM Sports team is integral to protecting our freedom everyday: the freedom to walk with pride, knowing that RMHS is the best school in the world.
Thank you and God bless Richard Montgomery High School.
