Class of ‘25 alum Matthew Kuwik had a season in the history books in a year where RM boys soccer made history, leaving his mark on the RM soccer program. Heading into the playoffs, the team had their hopes set high, hoping to achieve history. And win the dreaded regional title. No one on the team expected what followed soon after.
The team went on a historic run, with Kuwik being a huge contributor. The team defeated Einstein at home to secure their first regional title in school history. Kuwik scored in both, including an overtime game winner in the regional finals. “I think my greatest accomplishment would be scoring in the regional final at home in overtime to win it. We’d never had a regional final at home, so to win it here for the first time, it was for sure my greatest moment,” Kuwik said. The team continued their historic run in the state tournament, making it to the state finals for the first time in school history. Despite the heartbreaking loss in the state finals, the season goes down in history.
Kuwik was the leading scorer for the team. Through the first six games, he scored seven goals, netting over one goal a game on average. “His impact on the team was seen with his many goals this season,” class of ‘25 alum Alexi Zavala said. Kuwik is a goal scorer; his sheer ability to create shots and finish shines bright during games. “Matthew excels at finishing around the net,” senior Noah Kolchins said. Kuwik contributed to the offense with either an assist or a goal in almost every game this season, including a four-goal game against rival Rockville.
Kuwik’s historic season didn’t go unnoticed, receiving honors across multiple levels, including all-met first team, all-state first team, and all-county first team. “It feels good, I’m always going to bet on myself and have the mentality that I’m the best on the field. So to be recognized for that is a good accomplishment,” Kuwik said.
Kuwik’s leadership on the team played a major role in the team’s success. He took up the role of captain for the team, along with some others. And kept the team focused. “Matthew is always pushing us to be better and achieve things. He pushes us to be the best we can be,” Zavala said. His ability to lead and better those around him made him an important role in the historic team. “Matthew’s ability to lead showed and helped us achieve history,” Kolchins said.
The team is proud of what they have done. “We had many ups and downs, but I felt we did well collectively and ended up being arguably the best RM soccer team of all time,” Kuwik said. The team not only made history by hosting a regional finals, but they won the first one in school history, and had tremendous success in the state tournament.“He was just one of those guys, where if he got the ball, you knew something special was going to happen,” class of ‘25 alum Jonathan Lowinger. Kuwik’s season was nothing short of legendary , receiving first team honors across multiple levels, and leading RM soccer to a historic season. Kuwik is committed to continue his soccer career at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
“And last, I want to thank my coaches and teammates here at RM. You can’t win a game by yourself, and it wasn’t me who made RM history, it was all of us,” Kuwik said.
