The landscape of recruiting for college sports is quickly changing. Many high school players looking to play their respective sports at the next level find it difficult to showcase their skills and accolades. At Richard Montgomery, there are currently six sports commits in the senior class. There are two Division 1 players and four Division 3 players. Athletes are committed for boys lacrosse, girls field hockey, girls soccer, and girls lacrosse. Here are some of the current commits at RM and their experiences trying to play sports at the next level:

Charlie West, Westminster College, Boys Lacrosse

Charlie West is a senior at RM spending all three years on the boys varsity lacrosse team and one on junior varsity. He plays club lacrosse for Next Level Lacrosse, a lacrosse organization in the DMV area. West committed a few weeks ago to Westminster College in Pennsylvania to continue playing lacrosse. “About three weeks ago I visited the school and I loved it. [The team is] a great brotherhood and the coach supports the academics of all the players which is something I looked for as a recruit,” senior Charlie West said.

Michael Hemmig, Arcadia University, Boys Lacrosse

Michael Hemmig is a senior at RM and has played lacrosse for 3 years after transferring from St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac. He plays club lacrosse for Next Level alongside RM teammate Charlie West. Hemmig committed to Arcadia University in Pennsylvania for lacrosse in late September. “The recruitment process was very long and required a lot of patience. Arcadia stood out to me because, after a visit to the campus and talking with the coaches, I could tell they believed in me,” senior Michael Hemmig said.

Mckinley Heaven, University of Maryland, Girls Soccer

Mckinley Heaven is a senior at RM and has been an integral part of the girls’ varsity team’s success throughout the past four years. Heaven plays club soccer for Bethesda Soccer Club. Heaven’s sister, Marlee Heaven (Class of 2021), also committed to play Division 1 soccer and is currently playing at the Naval Academy. Heaven committed to The University of Maryland to play soccer in September 2023. Heaven is excited to play soccer at the next level while also still being close to home and near family. “The recruitment process was a lot and was overwhelming at times but taught me valuable lessons. I committed to UMD because, to me, it was everything I wanted. The team environment was so welcoming and all the players had a great relationship with each other,” senior Mckinley Heaven said.

Meredith Kearns, St. Bonaventure University, Girls Lacrosse

Meredith Kearns is a senior at RM and has been the starting goalie for the girls varsity lacrosse team for the past three years. While her senior season begins in March, Kearns is expected to be the starting goalie her senior year. Kearns committed to play Division 1 lacrosse at St. Bonaventure University in New York in April 2024.

Shelby Roth, Oberlin College, Girls Field Hockey

Shelby Roth is a senior at RM and has played field hockey at RM for the past four years. Roth starts at midfield for the girls varsity field hockey team at RM. Likely known for her insane stick skills and her ability to fight for any loose ball, Roth is the real-deal. Roth committed to play field hockey at Oberlin College in Ohio in August 2024.

Emma Pryor, York College, Girls Field Hockey

Emma Pryor is a senior at RM and has played field hockey at RM for the past four years. Pryor is a starting attackman for the girls varsity field hockey team at RM. Pryor committed to play field hockey at York College in Pennsylvania in January 2024.
