The Richard Montgomery boys varsity soccer team has had a successful start to the season, with an impressive 8-2 record and two games left before the playoffs begin. The season has already been historic, with the Rockets beating Wheaton 2-1 to claim the division title. Now, they are looking to finish the season strong and make a deep run into the playoffs.
Preparation started over the summer with workouts and team training. The team did have some difficulties to overcome early on in the season, however. They lost their first game in overtime to Gaithersburg, 1-0. “Losing the first game of the season, you know, heartbreaker, especially in overtime, but we knew it was just one game…we just put that game behind us and focused on how we can improve as a team during practice.” senior captain Alexi Zavala said. The Rockets improved from there, winning the next eight games in a row, including wins against tough opponents such as Churchill and BCC.
Team chemistry has been one of the key aspects of their success this season. Senior Joao Porto said, “We play really well together. I think the communication is there, always,” senior Joao Porto said. “We know how to build together…we don’t get mad at each other easily.” The team has a bond that has taken them to one of the best records in the county. “We’re just always bonding on and off the field together, so you know we have that chemistry…we’re always there for each other. We hold each other accountable,” Zavala said.
Another contributing factor to their success is their ability to stay healthy. The season is long, and avoiding injuries has been key to their winning record. “I think everybody staying kind of healthy. We haven’t had any major injuries…practices are intense as well,” Zavala said.
The Rockets’ historic division win came on October 7 when they defeated the Wheaton Knights. After being down 1-0 at halftime, goals from seniors Sergio Gomez and Matthew Kuwick put the Rockets on top. This was their first division title in over 50 years, setting the stage for winning their second regional title in three seasons. “Our biggest goals are definitely winning regionals and trying to make it far in states,” Sen said.
With two games left in the regular season, against Walter Johnson and Rockville respectively, the Rockets aim to continue their success and carry their momentum into playoffs. Through their preparation and positive team dynamic, they hope to continue their historic season for as long as possible.
