I joined The Tide in my sophomore year because I wanted to bolster my resume and become more involved in the RM community. I’ve been part of the newspaper since then, writing on a diverse range of topics. Writing for features has allowed me to explore different themes every month and to expand my worldview. I’ve enjoyed delving deeper into school events and yearly holidays that we typically gloss over.
During my time on The Tide, I’ve learned a lot about formatting and outlining articles, but I’ve also learned a lot about working with people. It’s been fun getting to explore others’ perspectives on events and discover new angles on a topic as I was writing. Interviews and investigation have become more natural which has been a big help to me at work as I’m involved with people constantly.
I would have liked to have been more involved in the paper and to explore journalism further as sometimes I saw writing articles as another box to check off on my to-do list rather than a task I actually enjoyed, but nevertheless, I have developed my commitment skills. Furthermore, though I was unable to commit to a position as an editor on The Tide, I do edit for another paper and I’ve found that simultaneously being a teacher and student has been very beneficial to my writing. I catch my writers making the same mistakes that I’ve made and can actually correct their errors from experience rather than just going by what a paper says.
While I don’t plan to continue journalism in college, I do plan to use the skills I have learned from my time writing on The Tide to ameliorate both my academic and creative writing. Thank you to the club sponsor, Ms. Kidd, and all the editors for your help over the years!
