Tips for new high schoolers:
From an old high schooler who has seen some stuff.
- Go to class
Although it is okay to skip class every once in a while (it’s an essential high school experience), skipping every day isn’t going to do you any favors. Also, if you are going to skip, get off the nasty bathroom floors. Might as well just walk out and go get food; no one’s stopping you.
- Keep up with your schoolwork
Yes, go to all the pep rallies and football games and hoco dances. But remember that high school has the word “school” in it. You’re here to learn, so do your assignments. At least most of them.
A note on procrastination: I am aware that some people work best when they have four hours of work to do and the deadline is one hour away. However, that is not me, so here’s my advice: if your teacher gave you two weeks to do an assignment, it’s probably because said assignment takes two weeks. You will cause yourself a lot of unnecessary pain if you wait until the last day.
- Avoid the drama
If your middle school experience was anything like mine, you’ve probably seen enough toxicity, drama and highly questionable friendships for one lifetime. Although it may take a while, find friends who truly value you and with whom you can communicate effectively. And remember when it comes to friend groups, bigger isn’t always better.
- Check in on yourself and your friends
High school can be tough, both academically and emotionally. I didn’t know burnout was a real thing until I got to junior year. Let me tell you it’s not fun. Remember that mental health is always the most important thing. Be aware of your mental state, take a break if you need to, and know that when you’re having a hard time, your classmates are probably struggling with the same issues. Try to be understanding and lend grace to your classmates and especially your teachers. Take care of yourself and each other.
- Utilize open lunch
One regret of mine is that while I did go out to open lunch a lot, especially senior year, I tended to eat at the same 2-3 places every time. Yes, The Spot is great, but Rockville has more to offer. Try out a variety of places. Also, get your driving license ASAP so your friends don’t have to chauffeur you around (you know who you are).
- Join The Tide! (shameless plug)
- Enjoy it
I think every person ever writes this in their senior reflection, but I’m saying it again: not one of my favorite high school memories has anything to do with my grades. High school is full of ups and downs. All of them are precious, so treasure every moment.
