Although hip hop artist Logic released his debut album Under Pressure a little over a year ago, it appears that he is already preparing for the release of his sophomore album. The once Gaithersburg High School student, now a world famous rapper, took to Twitter early September to announce the album’s title, The Incredible True Story.
Judging from already released information about the project, it appears that it will be a concept album; this means that all the tracks will contribute to one central theme. In this case, the album focuses on the story of a man named Thomas in the year 2115 who is searching for a planet called “Paradise.” According to the album synopsis also posted on Logic’s Twitter, Thomas is accompanied by a partner named Kai. Together, the two set out into the universe, armed with the purpose of finding mankind a new home.
The synopsis goes on to explain how right before the “mission”, Thomas had “just listened to a certain musician’s first album.” This is none other than a reference to Logic’s debut album, Under Pressure. Logic creatively bridges his two works together by having Thomas subsequently play Logic’s second album The Incredible True Story as the duo departs on their journey.
Logic demonstrates his attention to detail and the artistic intricacy of his album in the additional release of the album cover. In the front center, Logic is depicted at the controls of the spaceship that presumably belongs to Thomas. Beside him sit Thomas and Kai. Also pictured in the center is Bobby Campbell and 6ix, two well known producers that have worked with Logic before. In total, the cover features 10 people gathered around the front of the spaceship, having all contributed to the album or story in some way.
At the end of September, Logic published an in-depth explanation of his first album’s intended message and perspective. In a series of tweets, he revealed that his fans listened to the album Under Pressure from Thomas’s perspective, when he was on his way to pick up Kai. As many fans can recall, a computer program voice was heard throughout the debut album explaining how it was all put together. This computer program, as we now know, is the voice of the the ship’s onboard computer talking to Thomas. Now equipped with a greater understanding of Logic’s artistic and stylistic choices, listeners can more fully appreciate the genius of the artist’s second album.
The Incredible True Story has the potential to become a classic. In a twitter Q&A session, Logic stated that there will be a sci fi motion picture to accompany it but the album itself will be an “audio cinema similar to old time radio shows.” Citing inspiration from legendary directors such as Nolan and Tarantino, Logic went on to further explain the album was created to break free of the expectations set by other musicians and producers of the same genre.
Earlier today, the track list was revealed, showing 18 songs total. As of now, The Incredible True Story is scheduled to be released on November, Friday the 13th, meaning fans only have to wait a few more weeks to hear the full story of Thomas. The album is available for pre-order here.
