Amna Shamim

Amna is a senior at Richard Montgomery and the one of current Editors of the TidePod. I have known her for almost two years, however our interactions have been mostly limited to TidePod business. After interviewing her, I learned more about who she is.

In her free time, Amna enjoys reading all genres of literature, ranging from full blown fantasy to the classic literature she is required to read in her IB Literature class. The last book she read was Their Eyes Were Watching God, a 1930’s novel by Zora Neale Hurston. When asked what her favorite book was, she is unable to decide because she loves every book she has read for their unique qualities. Other than reading, Amna has recently picked up crocheting, and spends a lot of her time in her extracurriculars, which include the South Asian Students Association, French Honors Society, and The Tide.

As the editor of the Tide’s podcast section, I found it only fitting to ask if she had any podcast recommendations. One of her favorites is Overheard, by National Geographic, where employees at NGO discuss interesting things they’ve heard in the workplace, including the purpose of honey bees and how selfies were invented. In college, Amna plans to study Anthropology, as she enjoys learning about people and how they interact with one another and society. Career-wise, Amna hopes to become a human rights lawyer.

Finally, I asked Amna what was the best advice she has ever heard, which hilariously enough, she said was a Tiktok comment. It said, “Be where your feet are,” meaning live in the moment. She often feels overwhelmed by her many obligations and dissociates from reality, but remembering this phrase helps her recenter and remember what’s important.
