What does it mean to be morally grey?

Ali Saffel explores this question in her one-act play “Morally Grey”, a show in which a protagonist who makes questionable decisions is thrown for a loop when their conscience comes to life.

“I wanted to try something where the conscience comes to life and is just… nagging. It ended up turning more into a drama with comedic elements,” Saffel said. She drew inspiration from a mix of books, past experiences, and a course she took over the summer featuring a narrator-like character who would separate right from wrong.

Her creative process is largely a collaboration between her and her cast and crew. “I’m not telling them what to do—it’s more like ‘here’s the layout!’ and then they… do it. It’s a lot of working together and a lot of fun,” Saffel said. She deeply appreciates them for helping her carry out her dream and credits “Morally Grey” to not only her own ideas, but the work of everyone around her. “I took it from everybody and put it together so it’s their creativeness and a little bit of mine.”
